On World Liver Day, it’s important to bring attention to the link between obesity and liver health. Obesity is a major risk factor for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a condition that can lead to liver damage and other serious health problems.
Bariatric surgery, or weight loss surgery, has been shown to improve liver health in individuals who are obese. “Bariatric surgery can lead to significant weight loss and improvements in metabolic health, which can lead to improvements in liver function,” says Dr. Arush Sabharwal, a bariatric surgeon.
However, Dr. Sabharwal notes that bariatric surgery is not a one-size-fits-all solution for individuals with NAFLD. “It’s important to work with a healthcare provider to determine the best treatment plan for your individual needs,” says Dr. Sabharwal.
Nutritionist Kanak Agarwal stresses the importance of a healthy diet in maintaining liver health. “A diet high in processed foods, sugar, and unhealthy fats can contribute to liver damage,” says Agarwal. “It’s important to focus on a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins to support liver health. It should also be noted that lifestyle changes, including healthy eating habits and regular physical activity, can also play a role in improving liver function.”
Both Dr. Arush Sabharwal and Kanak Agarwal stress the importance of early detection and treatment of NAFLD. “NAFLD can lead to serious health problems if left untreated.
